British Columbia makes daylight saving time permanent

2026-03-08

Most of British Columbia in Canada will stay on UTC -7 after changing to daylight saving time on 8 March 2026, eliminating future transitions between standard time and daylight saving time in the Pacific Time zone of Canada.

Dawson Creek and a few other border regions of British Columbia are already observing UTC -7 all year. Cranbrook and other locations which alternate between Mountain Standard Time (UTC -7) and Mountain Daylight Time (UTC -6) will continue to switch between standard time and daylight saving time.

The change reduces the number of time zones in British Columbia from three to two.

In the press release from the Canadian government, the time zone in British Columbia after the change to permanent daylight saving time is referred to as "Pacific Time". This designation would cause confusion with the Pacific Time zone in the United States, where the time continues to alternate between standard time and daylight time. Other possible time zone names are Pacific Daylight Time and Mountain Standard Time, both having a UTC offset of -7.
